NEW BRUNSWICK DATING VIOLENCE PROGRAM RECEIVES FUNDING
OTTAWA, April 26, 2004 -- The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research of Fredericton, New Brunswick, will receive a $91,000 grant for a 16-month initiative to evaluate dating violence programs in New Brunswick. The Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of State (Infrastructure) and Member of Parliament for Fredericton made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women).
"In the province of New Brunswick, there are several organizations currently delivering programs designed to prevent adolescent dating violence", Minister Scott said. "This evaluation could help identify and disseminate better practices to help in program development, prevention or intervention."
"Dating violence is a prevalent problem in adolescent social relations", said Minister Augustine. "This project will help to prevent a form of violence that has devastating effects for women."
Phase I of this initiative, funded by Status of Women Canada in 2001, developed tools and methods to evaluate the dating violence prevention programs already in place in New Brunswick. In this second phase of the project, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research, together with academic and community partners, will use these evaluation tools to assess the programs, identifying their strengths and gaps.
Status of Women Canada is the federal government department working to promote gender equality and the full participation of women in the economic, social, cultural and political life of Canada. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
