MINISTER LIZA FRULLA TO LEAD THE CANADIAN DELEGATION TO BEIJING +10 MEETING IN NEW YORK

OTTAWA -- The Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, will lead the Canadian delegation to the Beijing +10 meeting to be held in New York at the United Nations (UN) beginning February 28.

"Canada is on a global journey toward achieving full equality," said Minister Frulla. "The Beijing +10 meeting in New York presents an excellent opportunity for a meaningful exchange on international initiatives towards achieving full equality." Minister Frulla will deliver Canada's statement outlining our own progress and challenges on March 2, 2005.

Beijing +10 brings together UN Member States to review appropriate progress made since the Fourth World Congress on Women held in Beijing in 1995. They will continue discussions on future approaches to advancing gender equality. Country representatives will also present their nation's progress over the past 10 years in such areas as human rights, violence against women and girls, health, unpaid work, poverty and women's diversity. Through exchange of experience and best practices, UN Member States will seek to reaffirm commitments made in Beijing.

Canadians celebrate International Women's Week (IWW) from March 6 to March 12, 2005, with the highlight being International Women's Day on March 8. Canada's IWW theme for 2005 is "You Are Here: Women, Canada and the World" that reflects the meeting to be held in New York at the UN.

In Canada, communities across the country are organizing their own events to celebrate IWW. For a list of other IWW activities happening across Canada, please visit the Status of Women Canada Web site: http://www.swc-cfc.gc.ca/
