Canada's New Government Supports Low-Income Women in Winnipeg



WINNIPEG, May 25, 2007 -- The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women  and the HonourableVic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Provencher,  today announced funding of $185,381 to the West Central Women's Resource Centre for their multi-year project, Women's Economic Security and Housing Project.

"Canada's New Government is proud to support the West Central Women's Resource Centre, a community-based organization that enables women to help themselves, their families and their communities," stated Minister Oda. "Through the Women's Economic Security and Housing Project, the Centre is facilitating positive change for low-income women in Winnipeg," Minister Oda continued.

"This project will build on the many strengths of this vibrant neighbourhood," stated Minister Toews. "I am pleased that we are able to continue our support for the West Central Women's Resource Centre, a vital part of this community."

Kildonan-St. Paul Member of Parliament, and vice-chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, Joy Smith commented, "This latest project will build on existing networks and create new ones as a means to bring about a stronger voice for local women."

Jackie Hogue, Executive Director of the West Central Women's Resource Centre, said the goal of the multi-year project, "is to build skills and self-sufficiency among community women and enable them to access required services. The project will enable the Centre to better assist women facing economic security and housing challenge issues and violence."

Located in a disadvantaged area of downtown Winnipeg, the West Central Women's Resource Centre's principles include: local control, inclusion of all women, participatory processes, social equity, skills development and individual and agency partnerships with the local neighbourhood and the broader community.

Status of Women Canada is a federal government agency working to promote the full participation of women in the economic, social and cultural life of Canada.
