National Office for Victims

Working with Victims of Federal Offenders

The National Office for Victims (NOV) is part of the Public Safety Canada's Community Safety and Partnerships Branch. The NOV, which was established on November 1, 2005, is co-located with Justice Canada's Policy Centre for Victim Issues.

The NOV focuses on victims of federally supervised offenders, including services offered to victims by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the National Parole Board (NPB). The NOV:

    • provides general information to victims and performs a referral function for specific information enquiries and addresses concerns and complaints of victims through the provision of information and referrals;
    • provides a leadership role on inter-departmental and inter-jurisdictional issues related to victims;
    • provides advice to the Minister of Public Safety and senior officials on correctional and conditional release matters related to victims;
    • provides a “victims lens” at the national level for Public Safety, the CSC and the NPB;
    • develops information products for dissemination to victims, victim service providersand the general public;
    • promotes awareness of CSC's and NPB's services for victims of federally supervised offenders.
    • complements the work being done by the Policy Centre for Victim Issues; and
    • provides input into the development of communication and training material by the Department, CSC and NPB.
