TAFL  right arrow  Help

Updated March 1, 2001
HOW  DO  I  READ  THE  COMPRESSED(ZIP)  FILES
I  DOWNLOAD  FROM  THE  TAFL  PAGE ?
The downloadable TAFL files are zipped and in ASCII flat-file format. You will not be able to read these files until you decompress (or unzip) them. PKZip and WinZip are two popular compression software packages which you can download from Strategis' technical section
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/cgi-bin/sc_help/help?page=sh90289e.html. Click on the appropriate link to choose the Macintosh or Windows platform. The link will take you to the Adobe Systems download page. From there, follow the instructions to get the programs you want.

Once the files are decompressed (unzipped), in order to get the TAFL data to display properly, you must use a spreadsheet software or text viewer that supports unlimited column width such as Microsoft Excel, Lotus Approach, Textpad32, Notepad, or Wordpad (in text mode).

From the TAFL page (COMPLEMENTARY FILE section), you can also download a utility program which converts the decompressed TAFL files from an ASCII flat-file format to a DBF format. Once in DBF format, the file data can be browsed with programs such as DBase (version 3 or higher), DBU Clipper, or Quick View Plus.

If you wish to search TAFL on-line, try the Radio Frequency (TAFL) Search on the Spectrum Direct site http://spectrumdirect.ic.gc.ca/engdoc/main.html. You may search by geographical area, frequency range, single frequency, call sign and protected frequency information.
