An Overview of Victim Services Across Canada

In Canada, over the past thirty years, there have been numerous advances in the services for victims of crime, expanding on the work started by grassroots organizations, sexual assault centres and shelters for battered women. These services are delivered very differently across the country depending on jurisdiction. Services for victims of crime can be delivered by police-based, system-based, court-based, and community-based victim services, volunteers, or by non-governmental organizations. All provinces and territories have legislation related to victims of crime. This overview describes the various types of victim services available throughout Canada. It should be noted that some jurisdictions have a combination of the various types of service delivery.
