The Environment Working Group

The environment has become a priority for Canadians. The Environment Working Group aims to increase cooperation and collaboration across North America with a view to enhancing our shared stewardship of the environment.

Initiatives under the environment workplan have included:

  • Improving air quality by addressing air pollution from ships through coordinated data-gathering and marine emissions inventory and developing methods for reporting on air quality in North America through the creation of air monitoring data sets to show the status and trend of air quality in key cities.
  • Improving water quality across North America by enhanced information sharing on policies and actions to ensure safe drinking water.
  • Combatting the spread of invasive species by identifying such species and developing a strategy to reduce their environmental and economic impact across North America.
  • Enhancing partnerships and incentives to conserve habitat for migratory species by developing work plans to trilaterally conserve priority migratory species and their habitats.
  • Developing complementary strategies for oceans stewardship.
