How can I apply for someone else?

There are specific situations where you may have to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for someone else. All documents must be original.

Select which best describes your situation:

Parents or Legal Guardians Applying for a Child

Children who are 12 years of age or older may apply for their own SIN. However, parents or legal guardians can also apply for a SIN for children under the age of majority of their province.

Here’s what you’ll need if you are applying for a child:

At a Service Canada Centre

  • your SIN OR your document(s)
  • your child’s document(s)
  • if you are a legal guardian, you will also need to provide an original document or a certified copy confirming legal guardianship. If you live in Quebec, a notarized will appointing the person as the legal guardian is an acceptable document.
  • payment, if required

If your application and identity document(s) are in order, you will get your child’s SIN in one visit and receive the card within five working days.

By Mail

  • a completed SIN application form
  • your child’s document(s)
  • your document(s)
  • if you are a legal guardian, you will also need to provide an original document or a certified copy confirming legal guardianship. If you live in Quebec, a notarized will appointing the person as the legal guardian is an acceptable document.
  • payment, if required

Send your completed application and original documents to:

Service Canada
Social Insurance Registration Office
P.O. Box 7000
Bathurst, New Brunswick
E2A 4T1
