Halifax, June 8, 2007 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced a focused approach for the National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC). Minister Day was in Halifax to deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremonies of the 21st Annual Atlantic Conference on Crime Prevention and Community Safety.
“Canada's New Government is serious about keeping our communities safe, which is why we are focusing crime prevention projects on those who are most at risk,” said Minister Day. “We are providing funding to crime prevention projects that can demonstrate they work to reduce crime.”
The Government of Canada will support initiatives that focus on specific crime concerns. Crime prevention priorities were established in partnership with stakeholders, using careful analysis of key crime trends.
Priorities for funding support include:
- addressing early risk factors among vulnerable families, children and youth at risk;
- responding to priority crime issues (youth gangs, drug-related crime);
- preventing recidivism among high risk groups; and
- fostering prevention in Aboriginal communities.
“We are committed to ensuring that invested funds provide value for money,” added Minister Day. “We will continue to work in close partnership with the provinces, territories and other stakeholders to keep our communities safe.”
