Chile - Earthquake - natural disaster

On November 14, 2007, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred near the city of Tocopilla in northern Chile. Several aftershocks followed the initial tremor. Damage to local infrastructure has been extensive in Tocapilla and surrounding cities, including San Pedro de Atacama, a major tourist destination. Two deaths and numerous injuries have been reported.

Travellers in the area should be aware that telecommunications and water, power and gas supplies may be affected. Expect delays as road travel may be affected. The Antofagasta airport remains operational.

Canadians should exercise caution, monitor local news reports, and follow the advice of local authorities coordinating the response. In case of emergency, contact the Consulate of Canada in Antofagasta, the Embassy of Canada in Santiago or the Emergency Operations Center in Ottawa (call collect to 613-996-8885).
