Canada's
National Parks and National Park Reserves have been set aside
by the Government of Canada for a variety of special purposes,
including recreational use and preservation of wilderness.
Each park is an area of outstanding scenic beauty, a
locality of historical importance or a site containing unique
features. These interests are often combined.
The 43 parks range in size from 8.7 square kilometres to
44 807.0 square kilometres and collectively cover an area
of 224 466 square kilometres, which represents 2.2% of the
total area of Canada.
In 1885, the Government established the first park, at Banff,
Alberta. National parks continued to be established steadily
until the late 1930s when, during the 30 years from 1937 to
1967, only two were established. From 1968 to 1972, however,
10 national parks were established in just five years. Parks
have been added regurlarly since the late 1970s.
