1. Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID)

(Back to table of contents)

The survey's objective is to understand the economic well-being of Canadians; what economic shifts individuals and families live through, and how it varies with changes in their paid work, family make-up, receipts of government transfers. SLID is the first household survey ever to provide national data on the fluctuations in income that a typical family or individual experiences through time, which will give greater insight on the nature and extent of poverty in Canada.

Extensive documentation is available electronically. A useful starting point is the "Survey Overview" located on the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics Web page of the Statistics Canada Web site. In addition to a general summary of the survey, it provides links to other SLID documentation.

2. Employment - Earnings and Hours

(Back to table of contents)

Labour Statistics Division within Statistics Canada produces estimates on payroll employment, earnings and hours paid by Canadian employers of firms of all sizes of employment. The data are compiled for the last pay period of each month.

3. The Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours

(Back to table of contents)

The Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours (SEPH) is designed to measure levels and month-to-month trends of payroll employment. The survey is derived from a combination of administrative records and a Business Payroll sample survey. The data are available at a detail industrial level for over 200 industries for Canada, the provinces and the territories. Data for selected industries are available in the monthly publication No. 72-002XPB and in the annual catalogue No. 72-F0002XCB and from the Statistic Canada CANSIM II database on Statistics Canada's Web site. Data are also available in the Statistics Canada bulletin The Daily. Free electronic access to The Daily is available on Statistics Canada's Web site.

4. Canadian Labour Force Survey

(Back to table of contents)

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a monthly survey involving around 50 000 Canadian households. The goal of the survey is to provide a detailed, current picture of the labour market across the country.

The LFS is the only Statistics Canada source of current, monthly estimates of total employment (including self-employment) and unemployment. The LFS is known as the source of the unemployment rate but LFS data are also used to produce other standard labour market indicators such as the employment rate and the participation rate. Along with these popular measures, the LFS also provides employment estimates by industry occupation, hours worked and much more, all cross-classifiable by a variety of personal characteristics. For employees, wage, union status, job permanence and workspace size are also produced. For LFS release dates, you may visit the Web page 2003 Release dates for major economic indicators of the Statistics Canada Web site.

Costs

A large selection of high-demand LFS monthly and annual average time series is also available through the CANSIM II database. The price is $3 per data series selected.

The "Labour Force Information" publication provides timely labour market statistics. It also offers a brief commentary highlighting recent developments in the Canadian labour market. It includes a series of charts and tables on a variety of labour force characteristics such as employment and unemployment for Canada, the provinces, metropolitan areas and economic regions. This publication is useful for these who need to be informed on current labour market conditions across the country. This publication and the online catalogue are available on the Statistics Canada Web site.

5. Labour Income

(Back to table of contents)

Statistics Canada maintains monthly data series of labour income (raw and seasonally adjusted).

The "Monthly Estimates of Labour Income" include the main components of wages and salaries, as well as supplementary labour income, for all industries and provinces/territories. These statistics are available in day-of-release printouts in the "Tables and analytical document" (No. 13F0016XPB) on diskette (No. 13F0016XDB) and on the CANSIM II database.

Statistics Canada maintains records related to place-to-place (special) price differences, including concepts and procedures (Catalogue No. 62-001).

Isolated Posts Allowances Indexes - Living Cost Differential - LCD - Indexes

LCD indexes express the place-to-place retail price relationship at a given point in time of a sample range of goods and services at an isolated post, in selected provinces and territories, to the prices of like goods and services in one of seven Canadian base cities.

6. Business and Labour Market Analysis

(Back to table of contents)

The Business and Labour Market Analysis Program conducts analysis and data development in business/industry and the labour market.

Any Statistics Canada data may be used in the analysis program. Analytical projects in the subject matters listed constitute a large part of the program. Special data development projects are also conducted, including the maintenance and updating of four longitudinal data sources:

  • firms with payroll and employment estimates;
  • workers for adjustment studies;
  • a small area file which provides employment and earning data on municipalities and other sub-provincial regions.
7. Gross Domestic Product

(Back to table of contents)

The Industry Measures and Analysis Division produces monthly, quarterly and annually measures of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by industry for Canada and annual measures by industry for the provinces and territories.
