The Honourable Monte Solberg

Minister of Human Resources and Social Development

Medicine Hat (Alberta)


Monte Solberg was sworn in as Minister of Human Resources and Social Development on January 4, 2007.

Formerly, he served as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration as part of the first Cabinet of the Government of Canada.

Minister Solberg represents the riding of Medicine Hat (Alberta). He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1993, and was re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006.

Mr. Solberg's previous parliamentary experience includes periods as Critic for Finance, for Human Resources Development, for National Revenue and for Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Solberg has been Vice-Chair of the Standing Committees on Finance, on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities and on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Recently, Prime Minister Harper appointed him to the Economic Growth and Long Term Prosperity committee. This committee considers longer-term matters concerning Canada’s economic growth and prosperity as well as issues that affect various sectors including, international trade, sustainable development, natural resources and regional development.

Prior to entering public life, he was a successful broadcaster.
