First update release of Ontario NRN dataset

October 16, 2007

On behalf of the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is pleased to announce the release of the first update of the Ontario portion of the National Road Network (NRN).

This new NRN GeoBase dataset was produced by and carried out in the framework of a maintenance agreement between NRCan and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources - Land Information Ontario (LIO).

The Ontario Road Network is comprised of more than 190,000 kms of roads with a positional accuracy of 10 metres or less and is considered the authoritative source of roads data for the Ontario Public Service under the Government Information Technology Standard, GO-ITS 29.

LIO has invested heavily in building business and technical models to efficiently maintain the Ontario Road Network data. This business model brings together data from the three government bodies with a legislative responsibility for roads in the province. These road authorities are: Municipalities across Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and other road authorities.

This GeoBase dataset does not include street names, place names and addresses. There is currently no agreement between Natural Resources Canada, Statistics Canada and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for their publication and maintenance on GeoBase. Users can access the Ontario Road Network product through the LIO Warehouse in a Linear Referenced or a Segmented format at the following address http://www.lio.gov.on.ca/en/ORN.htm. This dataset contains attribute information including street names, street addresses, road classification, road surface type, direction of flow and speed limits.
