Gotta getta galimoto!Gatineau, Quebec, July 24, 2007 — Would you like to build your own set of wiry wheels? Then come to the Canadian Children's Museum on July 31, August 14 and August 21 to make a galimoto!
You'll learn to twist and bend special supplies into a unique galimoto — a traditional African toy vehicle made of metal and other recycled materials. Special guest Elage Mbaye will be there to share his skills and memories of his childhood pastime.
Galimoto means "car" in Chichewa, the language of Malawi, which is one of several African countries where children fashion the handmade toy vehicles out of bits of wire, tin cans, sticks, string and even vegetables. Galimotos can take the shape of cars, trucks, bikes, insects and other animals, and come with a long wire to help push them along the ground.
Galimotos: Handmade Toy Vehicles Tuesdays, July 31, August 14 and August 21, 2007 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (bilingual) Canadian Children's Museum Free with Museum admission Maximum of 25 participants per workshop (ca A proud supporter of Canadian Children's Museum programming)
