Canadian War Museum presents Remembrance activities for the whole family

Ottawa, Ontario, October 31, 2007 — Join us for a week of Remembrance activities at the Canadian War Museum. Until November 11, the Museum is presenting special activities for youth and families, as well as touching wartime readings, special in-gallery activities and a concert series. These special events will help families remember and learn more about our country's military history.

Canadian War Museum Opening Hours:
November 4 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 5 – closed
November 6, 7 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 8 – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
NOTE – EXTENDED HOURS November 9 – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
November 10, 11 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Free admission at both the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization on November 11.

Special Remembrance Week activities include:

Remembrance Tour
Location: Information Desk, Lobby
Available as of October 31, this special tour highlights the areas of the Museum that touch on Remembrance, including Memorial Hall, Regeneration Hall and the Royal Canadian Legion Hall of Honour. Groups can reserve through Group Reservations. This tour is also available on request at the Information Desk throughout the week, and starting at 3 p.m. on Remembrance Day.

Wreath-Making Activity
Location: Lobby
Create a personalized poppy that will be added to a wreath along with those made by other Museum visitors. Wreaths will be on display from Tuesday, November 6 to Sunday, November 11.

November 9 to 11 — Concert Series
Join us for special musical performances dedicated to and inspired by Remembrance. All performances in LeBreton Gallery.

Friday, November 9
The Central Band of the Canadian Forces, accompanied by a special guest, 7 p.m.

Saturday, November 10
Youth musical performances, 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday, November 11
Youth musical performances, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

November 11 — Remembrance Day – Free admission!

Memorial Hall
Location and time: Memorial Hall and Lobby, 11 a.m.
At 11 a.m., via a large-screen display, see a beam of sunlight refracting through a single window onto the headstone of the Unknown Soldier (weather permitting), and remember the sacrifices made by those who have served and continue to serve our country. The Museum will observe two minutes of silence at this time.

CMW Book Club – Remembrance Readings
Location and times: Barney Danson Theatre, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Inspired by our on-going CWM Book Club, children and their families are invited to a special animator-led reading series scheduled throughout the day. Excerpts from a selection of remembrance-themed children's books will reveal what life was like for children during and after war. A special hands-on activity will also be offered to help bring stories to life for young children.

Workshops and Demonstrations
Location and time: Canadian Experience Galleries and Special Exhibition Galleries, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Throughout the exhibitions, participate in workshops and demonstrations that highlight the experience of ordinary Canadians in wartime.

Witnesses to History
Location and time: Galleries 3, 4 and LeBreton Gallery, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Visit the permanent exhibition and meet the men and women who experienced war first-hand. Listen to the stories of veterans of the Second World War, the Korean War, and other conflicts and peace support missions.

Musical Performances
Location and time: LeBreton Gallery, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Enjoy music for remembrance performed by local choirs and bands throughout the afternoon.

Remembrance Kit
The Canadian War Museum created the Remembrance Kit as part of its mission to promote public understanding of Canada's military history in its personal, national and international dimensions. The Kit contributes to this goal by providing students and teachers with access to the Museum's unique archival resources.

The Canadian Experience Galleries
The Museum's Permanent Exhibition presents the military history of Canada from earliest times to the present day, as well as Canada's history of honouring and remembrance. Each gallery highlights defining moments in Canada's military history and the ways in which past events have shaped the nation.

Royal Canadian Legion Poster Winners
Location and time: Atelier corridor, all day
Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion sponsors a Remembrance-themed poster and essay contest for students across Canada. The Museum honours the national winners, from grades 1 through 12, with a special display of their work.

Afghanistan: A Glimpse of War
Location and Time: Lt-Col John McCrae Gallery, all day
This powerful exhibition goes beyond the headlines to capture Canada's participation in the international security mission in Afghanistan. Detailing Canada's efforts to help Afghans rebuild a country shattered by years of war, this exhibition uncovers personal stories drawn from the chaos of battle and the struggle for peace.
An exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum, featuring the images of Stephen Thorne and Garth Pritchard.

War Brides: Portraits of an Era
Location and Time: Lt-Col John McCrae Gallery, all day
An evocative installation of paintings, photos, objects, and commentaries relay the life-changing experiences of some of the 44,000 women who came to Canada at the end of the Second World War as war brides. The contemporary material speaks of love and war, and adventure and hardship in a time of tremendous upheaval.
An exhibition organized by the Canadian War Museum in collaboration with Bev Tosh.

Stitches in Time
Location and Time: North Corridor, all day
Through 15 richly-coloured quilted artworks, textile artist Johnnene Maddison interprets the Second World War experiences of her mother and other women workers, providing a unique view of the complexity of life on the home front.
An exhibition organized by the Canadian War Museum in collaboration with Johnnene Maddison.

Remembrance Day – November 11

Coffee and Conversation: Remembrance Letters
Location and time: Canadian Postal Museum, 12:30 p.m. (in French), 1:30 p.m. (in English)
Postal mail is a luxury most of us take for granted. Come hear about the time when the post went to war, and listen to personal stories from that period.

Coffee and Conversation: Face the Battlefield
Location and time: Canadian Personalities Hall, 1 p.m. (in French), 3 p.m. (in English)
Montcalm and Wolfe fought and died for their countries on a famous battlefield, the Plains of Abraham. Museum archaeologist Dr. Jean-Luc Pilon discusses what is learned by excavating a more recent battlefield, Vimy Ridge.
