A sweet maple treat at the Museum

Gatineau, Quebec, February 20, 2007 — On March 3 and 4, join us at the Canadian Museum of Civilization for a talk and demonstration on traditional maple syrup production methods and history. A guest from the Maison des cultures amérindiennes will demonstrate traditional maple syrup-making techniques. You will also be able to handle artifacts associated with the tradition and sample a maple syrup treat.

The custom of collecting maple sap in bark baskets and boiling it down into syrup in clay containers has come down to us from the Amerindians. The tradition is especially important among the Atikamekw of Quebec. When the snow starts to melt, the entire community takes part in tapping the trees and producing maple syrup and sugar. The Atikamekw call this time of the year Sikon.
