The View from Above: Using RADARSAT Satellite Technology to Monitor Sea Ice

Photo: © Canadian Space Agency and MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, http://www.space.gc.ca, 2007.Since 1995, the Canadian Ice Service has been using RADARSAT-1, a Canadian made earth observation satellite operated by the Canadian Space Agency. The images produced by this satellite technology are important to the CIS' day-to-day sea-ice monitoring operations. RADARSAT-1 images are also used by the CIS to monitor oil spill pollution. This December, the new and improved RADARSAT-2 launches, offering next-generation features that will improve the core services of the CIS.
