The Dialogue Tool Kit

The Report - "Developing a Dialogue Tool on Genetically Modified Foods and Feeds (GMFF) in Canada" was submitted to the Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC) by the Exploratory Committee. It represents the work done on the Pilot Project for the GMFF Dialogue Tool for the period ending May 31, 2003.

The GMFF Dialogue Tool grew out of discussions with stakeholders (industry/developers, supply chain [farmers, producers, retailers], consumer, non-profit groups and environmental groups), and more detailed work by an Exploratory Committee involving stakeholders with diverse opinions but a common commitment to building an effective dialogue tool.

The GMFF Dialogue Tool allows for consideration of possible implications of GM products and processes under five categories: health, environmental safety, social considerations, ethical considerations, and broader societal considerations. Participants have the opportunity to debate the issue, share information and perspectives, and plot their dialogue along a spectrum of "acceptability" or "supportability".

CBAC believes the GMFF Dialogue Tool has significant potential to assist with future policy development, decision-making about biotechnology issues, stakeholder relations and the government’s goals with regard to constructive and productive public and stakeholder consultations.
