NOTE TO EDITORS Wednesday, October 03, 2007

Health Canada today released the latest report of The National Study on Balancing Work, Family and Lifestyle, researched and written by Dr. Linda Duxbury of Carleton University and Dr. Chris Higgins of the University of Western Ontario.

Health Canada welcomes the latest report from Dr. Duxbury and Dr. Higgins that will provide Canadians with helpful insight into what works--and what doesn't--to reduce work-life conflict.

While the report offers no "one-size-fits-all" solution, it does include recommendations for employees, employers, governments and unions to ease the pressures. It is entitled, "Reducing Work-Life Conflict: What Works, What Doesn't?" and is the fifth in a series of six reports that were commissioned by Health Canada in 1999, to study how Canadians balance their work and home lives.

Building on the findings of the previous reports in the series, this edition also finds that work-life conflict is costly to Canada's health care system, to the economy, and to the welfare of Canadians. The findings demonstrate that the proportion of the Canadian workforce at risk of work-life conflict will increase as the population ages, and because of an increasingly changing Canadian family structure.

This report can be viewed on Health Canada's Web site.
