HIV/AIDS

More than two decades after its onset, the HIV/AIDS pandemic remains an enormous challenge in Canada and around the world.

The creation of the Public Health Agency of Canada in September of 2004 set out a new era of public health response, built on increased coordination and cooperation. The lessons learned through work with HIV/AIDS and other diseases will strengthen efforts to help all Canadians live healthier lives.

The Agency is responsible for the overall coordination of the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada (including joint planning, monitoring and evaluation), communications, social marketing, national and regional programs, policy development, surveillance, laboratory science and global engagement focussing on technical assistance and policy advice.

Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative

The Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative (CHVI) is a collaborative initiative between the Government of Canada and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The initiative will contribute to the global effort to develop safe, effective, affordable and globally accessible HIV vaccine. This collaboration builds on the Government of Canada’s long-term commitment to a comprehensive approach to fight HIV/AIDS globally and domestically, and to develop new HIV prevention technologies.
