Two fined for illegal salmon fishing on Castor River
February  6, 2007

PORT AU CHOIX, NL – Two residents of Castor River South were convicted of illegal salmon fishing in Port au Choix Provincial Court on November 23, 2006.

Robert Applin was fined $1,600 and Dean Joseph Tatchell fined $1,500 for jigging salmon in a closed area. Both men received four years probation with the condition to stay away from inland waters.

Seven Atlantic salmon and a fishing rod were forfeited to the Crown.

Responding to information of poaching activity, fishery guardians from the St. Anthony Detachment, Brig Bay office, conducted a series of stakeouts along Castor River using night vision equipment and surveillance cameras. The individuals were apprehended July 2006.

Poaching is a serious threat to salmon stocks. Poachers disregard regulations and the efforts of community stewardship groups to protect and rebuild salmon stocks.

DFO encourages the reporting of poaching activity and remind the public that selling or purchasing wild Atlantic salmon are offences punishable by law.
