Jail Time for Illegal Trout Angling
February  19, 2007

SPRINGDALE, NL – Richard Hobbs of Springdale was convicted of angling for trout during a closed time and sentenced to one month in jail in Springdale Provincial Court on November 30, 2006.

Mr. Hobbs was placed on probation and not permitted to fish in coastal and inland waters for one year. His fishing rod and reel were forfeited to the Crown.

In his ruling, the judge considered Mr. Hobbs’ two previous convictions and fines for similar offences.

A second individual charged in the incident, Anthony Roberts of Grand Falls-Windsor, was fined $200 and forfeited to the Crown one rod and reel, and two trout.

Both men were apprehended on May 11, 2006, at Deer Pond, near Springdale, by a conservation officer from the Provincial Department of Justice, Springdale office. An investigation by DFO fishery officers resulted in charges under the Fisheries Act.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is committed to conserving and protecting all marine and freshwater species and works closely with user groups, watershed and stewardship groups, and provincial conservation officers to conserve and protect salmon and trout stocks in the province.
