Fish Harvesters Convicted of Obstruction of a Fishery Officer

GRAND BANK, NL –  Mr. Kevin Fizzard of Grand La Pierre was convicted of obstruction of a fishery officer and giving false statements to a fishery officer. Mr. Fizzard was fined $500 for each of these offences.

Mr. Cameron Hickey, Mr. Paul Hickey and Mr. Dennis Kearley, all of Grand La Pierre, were convicted of obstruction of a fishery officer and each was fined $500.

Mr. Edward Janes of Grand La Pierre was convicted of possession of lobster, obstruction of a fishery officer as well as obstruction of a peace officer. Mr. Janes was fined $500 for possession of lobster, $500 for obstruction of a fishery officer and received five days in jail for obstruction of a peace officer.

Mr. Everett James of Grand La Pierre was convicted of possession of lobster, obstruction of a fishery officer, resisting arrest and obstruction of a peace officer. Mr. James was fined $500 for possession of lobster, $500 for obstruction of a fishery officer, $500 for resisting arrest and received five days in jail for obstruction of a peace officer.

On April 18, 2005, as a result of an investigation into fishing lobster before the season, fishery officers from the Marystown Detachment conducted a patrol in the Grand La Pierre area and uncovered a quantity of lobster in carpots adjacent to the community. While attempting to seize the lobster, the fish harvesters converged on the fishery officers and obstructed them in the performance of their duty. Two of the fish harvesters were identified as owning the lobster and subsequently charged.

These six fish harvesters were convicted on June 18, 2007 in Grand Bank Provincial Court.
