Irrigation and Diversification

Irrigation development can potentially reduce farm risks, foster on-farm diversity, increase profit margins, and can improve the long-term sustainability of smaller farm units. The larger requirement for irrigation supplies and services and post-primary processing supports rural agri-business enterprises, contributing to more vibrant communities and infrastructure development. However, irrigation is a fairly resource-intensive activity, and can have a fairly significant impact on the environment. Through programs and activities undertaken in partnership with producers, academia, and other government and non-government agencies, AAFC attempts to foster irrigation development and management that minimizes environmental impacts.
