100th Anniversary Map Series

Image of land cover map with 100th Anniversary logo in foreground.June 2006 marked the 100th Anniversary of the Atlas of Canada. In recognition of this achievement, a special series of maps is being published throughout 2006 that demonstrates our continuing commitment to disseminating authoritative geographical information in high-quality maps a role we have upheld since the publication of the first edition in 1906. The maps in the series portray information for a range of geographical themes on Canada’s economy, environment, history, natural resources and population. New maps will be added throughout the year.

Have you noticed how people will gather around a wall map of Canada or the World, and how the map moderates the discussion? Using our fingers, we trace features or point to where events occurred, relating the discussion to features on the map, and thereby, to other information whether on the map or contributed by members of our group.

Canada is a very large country, and the decisions that shape the country are complex and inter-related. Discussions using the geographic context bring together much of the information that is needed to understand the similarities, differences, patterns and diversity of the environmental, economic, social, historical and institutional landscape that Canadians inhabit. The associated map is the graphic that allows us to participate in this analysis, appreciate the results and contribute to the decisions.

The Atlas of Canada puts information about Canada in a geographic context. The Atlas shows the whole of Canada and the thematic content of each map is consistent from sea to sea. The Atlas is an investment in the future of Canada: citizens knowledgeable about Canada and Canadians will make Canada a better place to live.
