Research Programs
The GHI has had two major phases to date. Under phase 1, the GHI established five major research programs and invested in three core research technology platforms. The initial phase of GHI was carried out from 1999-2002. The second phase of the GHI is currently underway and scheduled to last from 2002-2005. Eight major research programs were established in the second phase, including new seed projects in areas such as structural biology of cellular protein interactions and bioremediation. Prior to the launch of the GHI in 1999, the total annual investment by the NRC in genome sciences research was less than $3.5 million. By 2002, the NRC’s total investment in this area had grown to over $20 million with approximately 80% of this amount is invested in research programs involving partnerships between two or more NRC Institutes. By 2000, over 195 scientific and technical staff were working on GHI programs (including 106 new scientists and technicians hired by the NRC). ![The Genomics and Health Initiative has greatly increased the investment by the NRC in health related research. By the end of the first phase of the GHI (1999-2002), substantial progress had been made. Close to 100 articles were published (refereed publications, technical reports, etc.) and more than 70 presentations had been given at conferences. More importantly, the GHI helped NRC to establish new research networks and collaborations in the genome and health sciences. These networks continue to grow. Collaborations have been established with several Canadian universities and private sector companies. GHI activities are increasingly linked to the Genome Canada regional genomics centres through agreements totaling in excess of $20 million. In addition, GHI research to date has resulted in 18 patents being filed and 24 contracts signed. The industrial collaborations and the contracts have in turn produced a revenue stream of close to $1 million through the first phase of the GHI. Through the GHI, the NRC has also significantly augmented its health research activities, and strengthened partnerships with both Health Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
Under the first phase of the NRC-GHI (1999-2002), five major programs were established. This phase of the GHI is now complete.
Under the second phase of the NRC-GHI, eight major programs were funded.
Under the third phase of the NRC-GHI (currently underway) six research programs have been funded.
