Transport Canada’s Sustainable Development Strategy 2007-2009 builds
on the success of the 2004-2006 Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS). The
2007-2009 SDS streamlined the process and focused on a smaller number of issues
where the department can make a significant contribution. Three themes at the
heart of sustainable transportation were selected to focus our efforts: urban,
commercial freight and marine transportation. ![Three themes](/web/20071122100559im_/http://www.tc.gc.ca/programs/environment/sd/sds0709/images/figure1-2.jpg)
Our 2007-2009 SDS also addresses key federal environmental and sustainable
development priorities, including clean air, greenhouse gas emissions reduction,
clean water and clean land. The strategy strives to present a results-based
approach to achieve our long-term vision for sustainable transportation. The SDS
identifies specific commitments and targets that the department will undertake
to promote sustainable development within its policies, programs and operations.
In preparation for our 2007-2009 SDS, Transport Canada engaged selected
experts and stakeholders to provide focused guidance in each of the three theme
areas: urban, commercial freight and marine transportation.
The fourth strategy reflects the outcomes of cross-Canada
consultations with a broad range of
transportation stakeholders. Transport Canada assesses its progress on an
annual basis and reports through the Departmental Performance Report (DPR)
as well as through a supplemental SDS progress report.
