Drugs & Travel

Canadians can get into serious trouble for buying, selling, using or transporting drugs abroad. If you break the law in another country, you are subject to that country's judicial system. Canadian consular officials can provide assistance and support to Canadians in jail abroad, but they cannot arrange for their release.

  • Precautions: Drugs and Travel
Don't be tempted to smuggle drugs to earn fast, easy cash. Any deal that sounds too good to be true is too good to be true. Chances are it won't work.

  • Legal and Judicial Systems Abroad
You are subject to local laws. Being Canadian doesn't exempt you from local laws regarding illegal drugs. A violation will lead to a stiff fine, a jail sentence, or worse.

  • Medical Supplies
Even prescription medication may be treated as suspect, leading to delays and time-consuming investigations. Take appropriate precautions when travelling with medications.
