Canadian Legislative Bijuralism Site - At the Crossroads of our Legal Diversity

ABOUT US

The Canadian Legislative Bijuralism website was created by a group of lawyers from the Legislative Services Branch of the Department of Justice in collaboration with some of our colleagues from Francophonie, Justice in Official Languages and Legal Dualism. The purpose of the site is to gather and share information on Canadian legislative bijuralism, in part by making available to the public documents that were produced or published in the context of the revision and harmonization of federal legislation.

Many of the documents accessible through this site are the result of a close collaboration between the Department of Justice and other partners from the public and private sectors, including researchers, universities and associations. This site, which we hope you will find user-friendly, is intended to reinforce this partnership, based on a shared interest in bijuralism and harmonization. We will continue to post new information from our partners as it becomes available.

The focus of the work of our group within the Legislative Services Branch is the coordination of the harmonization and bijural revision of federal legislation. Our teams systematically review both existing and new legislation in order to ensure that both official language versions are consistent with civil law and common law traditions. We also provide consultative services in civil law and comparative law and assist in the development of innovative harmonization tools and expertise.

Please contact us if you have questions, comments or ideas for new projects in the areas of bijuralism and harmonization.
