New Voluntary Measures
For 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery

ST. JOHN’S - Recognizing the anticipated economic challenges facing the 2006 commercial fishery, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced today he has approved short-term voluntary measures to assist fishers.

“We know that economic and resource factors converging in 2006 may result in a very tough economic year for many fishers,” said Minister Hearn. “These measures may provide licence holders with an opportunity to reduce harvesting costs in 2006,” said the Minister.

“The measures are completely voluntary.” said the Minister. “They may help licence holders by giving them choices on how to pursue the fishery, but it is entirely up to individuals to decide whether to take advantage of the changes. We recognize, however, that the measures may not be a solution for everyone.”

The short-term measures include relaxation of the 12-month vessel registration and a ‘buddy-up’ or combining option for the 35’-64’ 11’’ fleet.

These measures will only apply to the 2006 fishery. Long-term changes to fisheries management and licensing policies will be addressed over the coming months by a Federal-Provincial committee in consultation with industry and stakeholders.
