Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Plan - NR4

February 2007

What is the NR4 or NR4-OAS slip?

Included with this mailing is your NR4 or your NR4-OAS slip. These are Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) tax slips for beneficiaries living outside Canada. You must include these slips when filing your Canadian income tax return. They are also needed if you report CPP or OAS pensions in a tax return for another country.

If you lived in Canada at any time during the past year, you may also receive a T4 slip.

Canada Pension Plan - Did you know?

  • You and your spouse or common-law partner can apply to share your CPP retirement pensions if you are both 60 or over. This may result in income tax savings.
  • If your children were born after December 31, 1958, the child-rearing provision may help you qualify for a benefit or increase your benefit payments. In calculating your benefits, the CPP can leave out the time when you had no income or a low income because you were raising children under the age of seven.
  • Surviving spouses or common-law partners of CPP contributors may get monthly survivor benefits. Dependent children up to the age of 25 are also eligible (those between 18 and 25 must be in school full-time).

Contact us to find out more.

Be sure to tell us if:

  • you move or your banking information changes
  • someone in your family who receives benefits is no longer eligible or dies
  • your marital status changes while you are receiving benefits
  • a child under 18 for whom you receive a CPP benefit is no longer in your care
