Kielty replaced Manny Ramirez in left field on Tuesday when Ramirez had to leave because of back spasms. One inning later, Kielty was pulled with a sore lower back.
Analysis: Kielty, who has suffered through calf, knee and back injuries this year, has had trouble with his back for a while. He plans to have X-rays on Wednesday. He's batting .259 with one home run and 11 RBIs in 21 games this year, but is 8-for-23 (.348) with a home run and eight RBIs in eight games since the Red Sox picked him up off waivers earlier this month. |

The Red Sox have signed Kielty to a minor league contract, giving them a potential backup for their playoff run.
Analysis: A switch-hitter, Kielty had just seven hits in 35 at-bats for the Athletics before he was released on July 31. He spent a month on the disabled list due to a strained left calf. Kielty has hit .255 with 52 homers and 244 RBIs in 579 career games with Minnesota, Toronto and Oakland. The Red Sox have been looking for an extra outfielder because Wily Mo Pena is hitting .218 with five homers in 147 at-bats this season. |

Kielty needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be sidelined for three-to-six weeks. He injured the knee Sunday during a rundown drill. "It's definitely a bummer," Kielty said Wednesday. "Right now I could play on it, but we're deciding that the best thing is to make sure it's good for the season."
Analysis: Kielty will likely be primarily a backup outfielder again for the A's. Kielty, who is strongest against left-handed pitchers, batted .270 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs in 81 games for the AL West champion A's last season. |
