Consular Affairs - About Us

The Consular Affairs Bureau provides information and assistance services to Canadians living and travelling abroad. These services are clearly established in international law and, more specifically, under the terms of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to which Canada and many other nations are signatories.

    We are committed to providing effective and efficient services throughout the world to all Canadians. Our offices provide a wide variety of services; however, we restrict some services, especially those for which there are adequate alternatives available locally.

    Our services are available through our headquarters in Ottawa and our network of offices abroad. Emergency services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can reach us by telephone, fax, TTY, mail, or e-mail.

    There are diplomatic and consular offices in over 260 locations in approximately 150 foreign countries. These offices provide different levels of services to Canadians abroad.
