APPOINTMENT TO THE NATIONAL CAPITAL COMMISSION

OTTAWA — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Ms. Marie Lemay as chief executive officer (CEO) of the National Capital Commission (NCC).

"I am pleased that Ms. Lemay has accepted this leadership role," said Minister Cannon. "Her experience and success in public administration and engineering will be tremendous assets to the NCC."

Ms. Marie Lemay has been CEO of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers since 2000. She has worked in municipal government for 15 years, managing infrastructure and new project development for the City of Gatineau, and occupying the position of director general of the municipality of Chelsea. Ms. Lemay has been a member of the Quebec government Expert Committee on the renewal of the Engineering Act in Québec, and vice-president of the Association of Municipal Engineers of Quebec. She is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. She holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Ottawa and a diploma in public administration from the École nationale d'administration publique. Ms. Lemay has been appointed as CEO of the NCC for a term of five years, effective January 7, 2008.

Through the Federal Accountability Act, responsibility for the NCC's CEO and chair of the board duties was split into two separate positions, with the chair as a part-time position and the CEO role as a full-time position. The chair position was filled by the appointment of Mr. Russell Mills in May 2007.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Micheline Dubé for her contribution as CEO since April 2007," added Minister Cannon. "Her leadership and professionalism during this time of change for the NCC have been greatly appreciated."

The NCC is a Crown corporation that was created by Parliament in 1958 as the steward of federal lands and buildings in the National Capital Region. The NCC mandate is to prepare plans for the development, conservation and improvement of the National Capital Region to reflect its national significance as the seat of the Government of Canada and to organize, sponsor and promote public activities and events in the National Capital Region to enrich the cultural and social fabric of Canada.
