Application for Employment benefits on-line

This section provides general information about completing forms over the Internet. For assistance with specific questions, use the blue help button next to the question or contact us at 1-800-206-7218.

The on-line application for Employment benefits is an electronic form that makes use of fields, lists, buttons and boxes to collect information. Below are some examples showing each kind of field.

Text Boxes:

Text boxes capture input from your keyboard. Many questions on the application will require you to fill in a text box. For short answers, the box will be only one line. If the answers require more space, you will have a multiple line box. Your input will "wrap" automatically at the right edge of the box so you won't have to worry about typing "out of the box".

Pass your mouse cursor OVER the text box. It will change to an "I". When you click inside the box, a blinking "input" cursor appears and you can type in the field.

Single Line Text Box:
Multiple Line Text Box:

As you progress through the form, using either the mouse or the TAB key, the pointer will follow along with you. All of the text fields have limitations on the number of characters you can enter. The single-line fields vary in length from 10 to 35 characters, depending on what information is called for. Most of the multiple-line text fields have a top limit of 200 characters (including spaces), so you are advised to be as brief as possible in your answers. You will be told when you've run out of space. If this happens, you will need to shorten your response, or write any additional comments on a separate piece of paper to submit to your Service Canada Centre.

The final text field is titled “Additional Information”. You can enter up to 2000 characters in this block. Again, if you have further information to provide, please submit it in writing to your Service Canada Centre.

Dropdown Lists:

Drop-down lists give you a choice from among several items. When you click your mouse in the field or "arrow" down in the field, you will get a complete list of the items. Click on one to choose it, and tab out to the next field. You can scroll down if the list is too long.

Example:
Select the Province you live in:

Buttons:

You will see buttons (known as "radio buttons") and check boxes on the form. The radio buttons will give you a choice between two or more items, and you will be able to select only one of them.

Generally, these are questions that require a "yes-no" answer.
Is your residential address different than your mailing address?
