Mental Health Professionals

Mental health professionals can play a significant role in addressing developmental challenges faced by some youth. While their direct involvement with youth is often limited to interaction with young people brought to their attention by parents, schools, or the justice system, they are key figures in providing help to these troubled young people.

Most mental health problems of children and adolescents are handled outside the youth justice system. However, the accessibility and continuity of mental health services for young people in conflict with the law, and in need of such services, is less certain. Links between the mental health and youth justice systems could raise awareness of this need and help ensure availability of services.
