Halifax-Montréal train (the Ocean)

The Ocean is a night train that runs six times a week (six times each way) between Montréal and Halifax. You will cover hundreds of kilometres while sleeping soundly and you'll wake up in a completely different part of Canada!

The Ocean leaves Montréal in the evening and travels through the small villages on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River before entering the Matapédia Valley. By very early morning, you'll see Chaleur Bay. From there, the Ocean heads south across New Brunswick, where it stops in Moncton before noon, and then continues on to Nova Scotia to arrive at Halifax around mid-afternoon. In the other direction, the Ocean leaves Halifax in the afternoon to reach Montréal the next morning.

The Ocean is the ideal choice for visiting Québec and the Atlantic region. It is also very handy for short journeys in Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick.

Please note that station locations on some Google maps may not be entirely accurate. We are currently verifying the exact locations of all our stations.

Classes and services available

Three classes are available:

  • Comfort class, which lets you travel far for less.
  • Comfort sleeper class, which provides you with a comfortable bed in private accommodations (available year round).
  • The Easterly class offers you more than superior comfort: you'll also enjoy a Maritime Learning Experience complete with presentations affording cultural and historical insights. Along with on-board accommodations, Easterly class includes exclusive access to the lounges and panoramic section of the luxurious Park car, breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner (all included in the ticket price), as well as all the special touches of first class travel. The Easterly class service is offered on the Ocean from mid-June until mid-October. Comfort Sleeper and Comfort class are available all year.
  • For couples seeking a more intimate Easterly class experience, choose a triple or quadruple bedroom (for 2 persons) with the distinctive ambience of the Park car and large picture windows! Additional perks include a closet, a call button, a private washroom with vanity, and cosy armchairs that transform into two twin beds once night falls.

For a description of the services (meals, baggage, etc.) and cars available to each class of service, go to the page describing the class or service of your choice. During the off-peak season, from mid October to Mid-June, the tables of our dining cars will be reserved foremost to clients in Comfort sleeper class. Take note however that with the addition of our Easterly tourist class during the peak period, tables in the dining cars will be reserved firstly for Easterly class clients and secondly for Comfort sleeper class clients (if seats are still available). Do you prefer to eat at your seat? Feel free to go to the take-out counter in the service car.

Connections and stations

In Montréal, you can take the Montréal-Ottawa or Montréal-Toronto train to visit Ontario. Two trains also leave Montréal for northern Québec: the Abitibi, which travels to La Tuque and Senneterre, and the Saguenay, bound for Jonquière.

The many stations along the Montréal-Halifax route allow for easy connections. Most stations are in the downtown area and services are integrated with other transportation modes: car, plane, bus and ferry. From New Brunswick, you can easily reach Prince Edward Island. Ferries also ply between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
