Questions to Settle When Meeting with the Designer
Contextual information to convey to the designer
- What is the purpose of the publication?
- What is the message to be conveyed?
- Who is the target audience?
- How will the publication be distributed (e.g. print, HTML, CD-ROM)?
Graphic design considerations/technical specifications
- Is this publication to be tied in with other existing products, or products to be developed?
- Should this be a one-, two- or four-colour publication (consider both the cover and interior)?
- Are there colours that must be used or avoided?
- Are there specific graphic elements, logos or images that must be incorporated? If so, can the client supply them or provide a contact?
- Which federal identity requirements apply (e.g. Canada wordmark, partnership signature)?
- Does the client prefer a photographic treatment, an illustrative approach, an abstract design, or a plain cover?
- Will photos be used in the interior? If so, should the designer use royalty-free, stock, or custom photos?
- How long is the text?
- Will there be graphics/tables/figures included?
- Are there size restrictions (e.g. mailing considerations)?
- Are there any special features to be taken into consideration (e.g. perforations for a reply questionnaire)?
Deliverables
- What are the time lines?
- How many design concepts should the graphic designer submit for the cover (two or three is common) and for the interior? For the cover concepts, the client should provide the publication title in both official languages.
- Will the client need the native design files (PC, Web, PSD files, etc.) for future use?
