RCMP Fact Sheets

National Youth Officer Program

  • Canada has over 16,500 schools, serving more than 250,000 students.   The RCMP provides services for approximately 5,000 of these schools.

  • Youth has been a strategic priority of the RCMP since 1999, with the goal of reducing youth crime and victimization. Extensive consultations by RCMP National Youth Services demonstrated that the best venue for police to connect with youth is through the schools.

  • A formal external evaluation confirmed police presence in schools to be an extremely valuable crime prevention tool.

  •  RCMP National Youth Services developed and implemented a structure that would provide police officers with the tools and guidance to ensure their school visits are meaningful.  The first step engaged partners who were knowledgeable about police interaction with schools and sought their guidance for the development and implementation of this project.  Consultations with representatives from education, the community, and our police partners were undertaken and the RCMP has assumed the lead in the creation of a nationally comprehensive police in schools program - the National Youth Officer Program.

  • The RCMP Youth Services goal was to implement a National Youth Officer program (NYOP) within the school community across the country to promote school health, student wellness and safety.
