ecoENERGY Retrofit
ecoENERGY Retrofit provides federal grants and incentives to homeowners and small and medium-sized businesses, industry and public institutions to help them invest in energy and pollution-saving upgrades.
In addition to the grants available under ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes, selected provincial, territorial and municipal entities also offer grants and incentives to homeowners who conduct energy saving upgrades.
Energy-Efficient Equipment
BC Hydro's Power Smart Program offers a $30 rebate for vending machine sensor that are purchased and installed in BC. For more information, visit their Web site.
Enbridge Gas Distribution's “Spray n' Save” program offers a free pre-rinse spray valve (PRSV) replacement program to its full-service restaurant customers. For more information, visit the their Web site.
Manitoba Hydro's web site provides information on commercial refrigeration incentive programs which are unique in Canada, for retail stores and for restaurants. Please refer to the “Commercial Refrigeration Application” for more details on available rebates.
“Rinse and Save” Program with Manitoba Hydro, offers energy efficient pre-rinse spray valves to be installed free of charge in restaurants and any commercial food service establishment in their service area. This includes schools, hospitals, grocery stores, and hotels. For more information, visit the Web site.
The Clean Air Foundations's CoolShops program in Ontario is designed to identify and implement energy management measures. As part of this program, CoolShops will offer free pre-rinse spray valves for restaurants. For information, visit the Web site.
ENERGY STAR® Qualified Products
Efficiency NB, a crown corporate of the Government of New Brunswick, promotes ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and products in its public education initiatives as well as providing an ENERGY STAR Package Incentive Bonus as a component of its
New Homes Program.
The Government of the Northwest Territories Energy Efficiency Incentive Program helps consumers to purchase more energy efficient products. The purchase of a new ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator (larger than 6.4 cubic feet) or a new ENERGY STAR qualified front-loading clothes washer qualifies for a $200 rebate for customers with diesel or natural gas or a $100 rebate for customers with hydro. The NTW also offers various rebates for the purchase and installation of high efficient furnaces or boilers, emission neutral wood or pellet stoves or efficient water heaters. The Province of Ontario has new rebates. A Home Energy Retrofit Program that will provide up to $5,000 rebates for a home energy retrofit that include ENERGY STAR qualified furnaces for heating, solar domestic water systems and insulation.
A point-of-sale retail sales tax exemption for decorative light strings, ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs, refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers, freezers, dehumidifiers and room air conditioners that are purchased, rented or leased after July 19, 2007 and before July 20, 2008. Province of Saskatchewan offers a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) exemption for ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. The PST rebate for qualifying energy-efficient household appliances was converted to a point-of-sale tax exemption effective April 1, 2005. Appliances eligible for the PST rebate are ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers. The tax exemption applies to the sale or long-term lease (rentals for a continuous period of at least one year) of a new qualifying appliance. Combined clothes washer/dryer units are eligible for an exemption of 60 percent of the PST payable when the unit is sold for a single price. Used appliances are not eligible.
As well, the PST exemption for qualifying ENERGY STAR residential furnaces, boilers and ENERGY STAR heat pumps that was scheduled to conclude on March 31, 2007, has been extended indefinitely. For the period beginning November 8, 2005, qualifying energy-efficient furnaces and boilers are exempt from PST if purchased or leased for a continuous period of one year or more. For the period beginning July 1, 2006, qualifying ground and air source heat pumps, are exempt from PST if purchased or leased for a continuous period of one year or more. SaskEnergy ENERGY STAR Loan Program. April 1 – September 30, 2007 SaskEnergy and participating SaskEnergy Network Members are offering residential customers prime rate loans (oac) on the purchase and installation of an ENERGY STAR qualified furnace with a high efficiency DC variable-speed motor. BC Government offers a Provincial Sales Tax Exemption from February 21, 2007 to March 31, 2009, pre-manufactured ENERGY STAR qualified windows, skylights, doors, side lights and transoms are exempt from provincial sales tax. Also up to March 1, 2009, ENERGY STAR qualified residential forced air furnaces or boilers (gas-fired and oil-fired), air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps are eligible for a provincial tax exemption if purchased or leased for residential purposes. Enbridge Gas Distribution is offering their customers a $100.00 rebate on all ENERGY STAR qualified high-efficiency natural gas heating systems. Receive a $100 rebate on an ENERGY STAR qualified high-efficiency natural gas heating system that is purchased and installed between September 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008. Offer limited to one rebate per address. Full details can be found on their Web site.
Enbridge Gas is offering all residential and small commercial customers a $100 on-bill credit for upgrading their existing heating system to an ENERGY STAR qualified high efficiency natural gas forced air furnace or boiler heating system from April 1, 2007 to September 30, 2007. Hydro-Québec is offering mail-in rebates of 100 $ on the purchase of a new ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers from January 1st to December 31 2007 and 50 $ on the purchase of a new ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator of at least 8.5 cu. ft. until December 31, 2007. Appliances must be purchased and delivered in Québec.

Manitoba Hydro's Power Smart Furnace/Boiler Replacement Program offers a $245 credit on customers' natural gas bill for the installation of a new ENERGY STAR qualified high-efficiency furnace or boiler. The Power Smart Home Insulation Program offers financial incentives on the purchase of insulation (up to 100 percent of the material cost ) that must meet eligibility requirements and insulating work that must meet the minimum Power Smart levels. Further details can be found on the web site. The Power Smart Appliance Rebate Program offers rebates on ENERGY STAR qualified appliances: $100 for clothes washers, $50 for fridges, and $25 for chest freezers. FortisBC offers all its customers an incentive for energy efficient air-source heat pumps through the PowerSense Air Source Heat Pump Program. For qualifying models, the financial incentives will consist of either a rebate or financing of up to $5,000 over 10 years at 4.9% fixed rate. The Energy Efficiency Fund will offer owners of residences supplied by Gaz Métro for heating purposes a $5 per square feet rebate with the purchase of high energy efficiency ENERGY STAR windows and sliding doors, up to maximum of $500.
Gaz Métro offers a $30 financial incentive on the purchase of an ENERGY STAR programmable electronic thermostat. Financial incentives up to $450 are also available on the purchase of ENERGY STAR high efficiency hot air furnace and up to $600 for an ENERGY STAR superior energy efficiency boiler.
City of Victoria British Columbia's Incentive on the purchase of eligible high-efficient clothes washers. More
City of Toronto's Incentive on the purchase of eligible water efficient clothes washers. As part of the Wash 'n' Save program, the City of Toronto offers Toronto residents a $60 rebate on the purchase of an eligible water efficient clothes washer that will save water, energy and money. More
Terasen Gas is offering a $300 rebate for converting to a high-efficiency ENERGY STAR qualified natural gas heating system purchased and installed from July 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007 for Squamish residents only. Full details are available on their web site.

Energy Efficient New Homes
- The Yukon Housing Corporation offers mortgage financing of up to $200,000 at a reduced interest rate for homes built or upgraded to the corporation's GreenHome standard, which includes strict energy efficiency requirements. GreenHomes must be constructed by Yukoners, and Yukon businesses must supply at least 75% of the building materials.
- Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation offers a 10 percent refund on its mortgage loan insurance premium when a borrower buys or builds an energy-efficient home. To qualify for this refund, the home's energy efficiency must be rated using the EnerGuide rating system or be R-2000 certified and meet certain minimum requirements.
- Genworth Financial Canada has instituted an Energy-Efficient Housing Program that offers the same reduction in mortgage loan insurance refunds as CMHC and is based on the same criteria.

Built Green Municipal Incentives in Alberta and British Columbia offer a building permit fee rebate for homebuilders who achieve R-2000 or Built GreenTM certification. Upon meeting all permit and inspection requirements, rebates will be issued to the building permit applicant, calculated on a percentage of the base building permit fee. There are four categories of eligibility:
- 30% rebate of the building permit fee for R-2000 Certification
- 30% rebate of the building permit fee for Built GreenTM Gold Certification
- 20% rebate of the building permit fee for Built GreenTM Silver Certification
- 10% rebate of the building permit fee for Built GreenTM Bronze Certification
This incentive is currently available in the following municipalities:
- The City of Lethbridge is offering homebuyers in the SunRidge development rebates for houses that meet environmental performance targets. For houses that meet the “gold” standard for environmental achievement, homeowners will receive a rebate of $3,500. For houses that meet the “silver” standard for environmental achievement, homeowners will receive a rebate of $2,500. Environmental standards are based on the EnerGuide rating for houses, which takes into consideration energy efficiency and energy consumption in the home.
- Nova Scotia's Department of Energy provides incentives to offset the initial cost of an EnerGuide building plan evaluation. Homeowners receive $175 for a rating of less than 77 on the EnerGuide scale, $350 for a rating between 77 and 79 and an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher earns an incentive of $500.00.
- Buyers of new high-efficiency Novoclimat-certified houses heated with natural gas and located in Gaz Métro territory can obtain a $2,000 incentive from Quebec's Energy Efficiency Fund. Apply by completing the form available on the Web site or by calling the Energy Efficiency Fund at 1-866-529-2216. Once the house is certified, homeowners must submit a copy of the Novoclimat certificate. Although the form states that it must be submitted by September 15, 2005, it can be submitted after that date as the program has been extended.
- Manitoba Hydro offers up to a $1,000 certificate towards the purchase of an ENERGY STAR® qualified front-loading washing machine, or a $600 electricity bill rebate, to customers who build a new single-family home heated with electricity or natural gas that incorporates prescribed energy efficient components. Builders, who must have completed specific Manitoba Hydro training, must install all features specified in the program's Technical Standard. New homes built under this program receive an EnerGuide for Houses energy efficiency rating and Power Smart certification.
- Newfoundland Power offers up to $10,000 in financing to cover the cost difference between a conventionally constructed home built to the National Building Code Standard and the same house built as a high-efficiency registered R-2000 home. Loan payments are made through monthly electric bills, with repayment schedules up to 60 months. The interest rate available from October 1 to December 31, 2006 is 10.0%

Efficiency NB offers new homeowners a grant if their home has an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher. There are four versions of this grant:
- A Basic Grant of $1,000 for first owners of new homes that achieve an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 or are R-2000 certified, regardless of the heating system type.
- Central Heating – Electric Grant of $2,000 for first owners of new homes that achieve an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 or are R-2000 certified; AND have an electric boiler, furnace or ENERGY STAR qualified (or equivalent) air source heat pump as the primary source of heating.
- Central Heating – Non-Electric Grant of $3,000 is available to first owners of new homes that achieve an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 or are R-2000 certified; AND have an eligible non-electric central heating system.
- An additional incentive of $250 is available to homeowners who install ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and lighting

Saskatchewan has announced rebates of up to $2,400 for buyers of energy efficient new homes.
The provincial energy efficiency rebate for new homes starts at $1,000 with the purchase of an ENERGY STAR qualified or R-2000 home and moves up to a maximum of $2,400.
Here's how the rebate breaks down:
- purchase of ENERGY STAR or R-2000 certified home – $1,000
- purchase and installation of a solar domestic hot water heating system – $1,000
- purchase and installation of a grey or drain water heat recovery system – $150
- purchase and installation of one to two qualifying natural gas appliances, like ranges and clothes dryers – $100 to $250
