Tourist information on Churchill

See the northern lights from a 360-degree view!
From October 1-31, 2007, choose Comfort sleeper class aboard the Hudson Bay and enjoy all-included meals, unlimited coffee and tea, and access to the exclusive Park car with scenic dome. Imagine seeing the rugged Arctic tundra - and maybe even the aurora borealis - up close!

In the heart of the country, on the banks of Hudson Bay, stands a small village of barely 800 inhabitants: welcome to Churchill, Manitoba! Here, subarctic nature will seize you with its vastness as the tundra stretches out before your gaze, the white luminosity showing the details in sharp relief.

See wildlife up close...

As the world's polar bear capital, Churchill has developed a tourist industry dedicated to observing these mysterious carnivores. From mid-October to mid-November, tourists can watch this rare animal in its remote habitat - from the safety of converted buses. In the summer, you may choose to go whale watching instead, as a large population of belugas migrate every summer into the waters of Hudson Bay and Churchill River. You can even go diving in the company of these adorable white whales!

...and a unique natural environment too

There is no shortage of activities in this secluded spot: there are ecological hikes, hunting, fishing, dog-sledding, snowmobile or helicopter excursions, and photo expeditions - to name just a few. In summer, enjoy the magnificent awakening of nature when millions of wildflowers bloom and wildlife abounds.

Whatever the season, the region's clear, starry sky, frequently lit up by splendid northern lights, will enliven your evenings.

While you're here, see Wapusk National Park, which lies on the transition between boreal forest and Arctic tundra. Half of the Park's area is also covered by water, including lakes, marshes, peat bogs, rivers, and vast wetlands. Also, visit the York Factory, the national historic site about the Hudson's Bay Company, or the magnificent Prince of Wales Fort, which has been painstakingly restored.
