Tourist information on Vancouver

Vancouver is a dynamic city in which the modern lines of skyscrapers blend perfectly with the rustic charm of pleasure-boat and houseboat docks. Surrounded by sea and mountains and enriched by many ethnic communities, Vancouver is a centre of vibrant cultural and social life.

A favourite yuppie haunt, Robson Square harmoniously blends turn-of-the-century buildings and modern constructions. The Gastown industrial zone is the city's oldest neighbourhood. Spruced up to suit modern tastes, its warehouses have been turned into stores and restaurants. Only the steam clock remains intact from its bygone days.

On Granville Island, enjoy the artists' workshops and boutiques and the particularly colourful market. Emily Carr was a painter who drew her inspiration from First Nations culture and the vastness of the western forests, and the permanent exhibition devoted to her work alone makes a visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery well worthwhile.

Check out the brightly coloured shops of Chinatown and the display of Chinese gymnastics on Sundays in Queen Elizabeth Park. This park also offers you a very fine view of the city centre and the surrounding mountains. For a holiday atmosphere and amazing sunsets, go to English Bay Beach.

The bright and spacious Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia provides an enlightened look at the seven cultural groups that inhabit the West Coast.

Stanley Park, facing the ocean, is the lungs of the city. Walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters all take advantage of this magnificent green oasis with its gigantic trees. The Vancouver Aquarium houses more than 8,000 aquatic organisms; its marine mammals section is especially popular. The charming Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, spreading over a hundred hectares, presents gardens representing different regions of the world. Above all, don't forget to make a detour to look at the famous Lions' Gate Bridge, another Vancouver must.
