IAIS Standards and Guidance Papers

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) adopted several new standards and guidance papers at its 13th Annual Conference and General Meeting, held in Beijing, China in October 2006. These are listed below, together with links to the actual documents on the IAIS website.

  • Standard on Asset-Liability Management.
    • This is the first of a suite of standards proposed under the IAIS Framework for Insurance Supervision, and detailed in the Roadmap paper. The Standard describes best practices for asset-liability management.

  • Standard on Disclosure Concerning Technical Risks and Performance for Life Insurers.
    • This Standard sets minimum disclosure requirements for all life insurers (including reinsurers) in order to enhance market transparency and to facilitate market discipline.

  • Guidance Paper on Preventing, Detecting and Remedying Fraud in Insurance.
    • The purpose of this Guidance Paper is to ensure that the insurance industry understands its potential vulnerability to fraud and takes actions to mitigate these risks.

  • Revised Guidance Paper on Risk Transfer, Disclosure and Analysis of Finite Reinsurance.
    • The revised Guidance Paper adds life insurance examples and reflects the latest developments in accounting for reinsurance contracts.

  • Issues Paper on Regulation and Supervision of Captive Insurance Companies.
    • This Issues Paper outlines features that differentiate captive insurers and hence, factors that supervisors should consider when evaluating such insurers.

  • Issues Paper on Issues in Regulation and Supervision of Takaful (Islamic insurance).
    • This Issues Paper was prepared jointly with the Islamic Financial Services Board, and deals with the application of the IAIS Core Principles to the Takaful industry.

    •  This Issues Paper complements the Standard, providing additional background and guidance on asset-liability management techniques and a glossary of related terminology.
