Tips
-
To control the position of elements on the page, use HTML table to
"hold" objects. For example, the boxes (and supporting text) for the search area
coordinates appeared differently ( and quite STRANGELY) until I embedded these in a 5
column by 5 row HTML table (no table borders showing). For example the three text boxes
for NORTH LATITUDE (degrees, minutes and hemisphere are in one cell of the HTML table.
This cured the problems of variable display of this component, depending on the browser.
-
Storing the user-specified Latitude and Longitude ranges was a challenge.
The current version uses SESSION VARIABLES to store the Latitude and Longitude
information, so that a user can run a query, see the results, then return to the input
form page (using the browser's BACK button) and be presented with the previous latitude
and longitude selection. The Date Range Selection information is preserved, but the
settings for the RADIO BUTTONS and CHECK BOXES are reset to default values each time.
-
As a result of the use of SESSION VARIABLES, users will retain their latitude and
longitude settings for a SESSION, but the values will be reset to default values when the
web server detects a new session, even if it is from the same user. The definition of a
'session' (and the length of time that the user specifications 'persist' can be set in the
application. No specific time period is set in this application, so it will default to 20
minutes. This means that if you return to the input page within 20 minutes of having
submitted a query, your previous latitude and longitude selections should be presented to
you. It may be necessary to 'REFRESH' the input page using the web browser's 'REFRESH'
button.
