Northeast Pacific Model Welcome to the operational model page for the Northest Pacific Ocean. Please click on the image below to take you to the forecast page. This page works best with Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 6. JDF POM model description The numerical model used in the simulations is called the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), named after the group who developed it. It is fully 3D, solving the full equations for a fluid, and for this reason is called a primitive equation model (as opposed to models which make simplifying assumptions). Additionally, it has a free surface and solves for the evolution of underlying physical parameters (Temperature and Salinity). The POM model's vertical coordinate follows the underlying bathymetry (called a sigma-coordinate), making it ideal for the study of regions with multiply connected domains and rapid changes of depth. Wind stresses and sea level pressure are provided by the US Navy's COAMPS (Combined Ocean Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System). Initial temperature and salinity are provided by the US Navy Modular Ocean Data Assimilation System (MODAS) from the Stennis Space Center. Four tidal constituents are included: the two largest diurnal (daily) tides (K1 and O1) and the two largest semi-diurnal (twice-daily) tides (M2 and S2).
