Playing Prince Edward Island - Web exclusive

By Anita Draycott

Without the summer's heat, PEI's clean fall air pairs perfectly with its more than 30 courses - many designed by the world's best architects.

For savvy swingers, fall is the best time to play golf. And what better place to tee off than on Prince Edward Island, voted Canada's Number One Golf Destination by ScoreGolf magazine? From the spectacular grounds overlooking the ocean to rolling championship greens and beginner courses, this island is a hole in one for any skill level - all within a 90-minute drive from the island's center.

The Brudenell Resort, Dundarave, designed by the award-winning team of Dr. Michael Hurzdan and Dana Fry (their Tavern Creek Course design was awarded Best Golf Course in Missouri in 2005 by Golf Digest magazine) is the ideal course to hone your target skills or practice your sand wedge in its 100-plus bunkers. The neighboring Brudenell River course is the locals' favorite; broad fairways play around a series of picturesque lakes, ponds and manicured gardens.

Golf Digest Places to Play awarded the Links at Crowbush Cove 4½ stars and raved that the Thomas McBroom design is "golf at its absolute best." (Score Golf magazine's Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada includes 10 of McBroom's courses.) Routed through the sand dunes on the island's north shore, the course comes with nine water holes and plenty of pot bunkers - not to mention sudden gusts from Crowbush Cove. If you're having an "A" day, a good round at Crowbush is an ego thrill, but even if it's more of a "D" day, you'll still enjoy the spectacular links layout and seaside views, especially at the 11th tee.

Island fairways

Andersons Creek, designed by Graham Cooke (awarded Third Best New Private Course in the U.S. by Golf Digest magazine for Washington's Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club), is the only course in PEI with a GPS system and purportedly the best greens on the island. The number four signature hole was modeled after Golden Bell, the number 12 hole at Augusta National in Georgia.

Just up the hill from the New Glasgow Lobster Supper barn, the island landmark home to the original island lobster dinner, the Glasgow Hills Resort & Golf Club offers sensational views of the River Clyde and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This Les Furber design (he and Robert Trent Jones partnered to design the Geneva Golf and Country Club in Switzerland and the Pevero Golf Club on the island of Sardinia) is a thrilling roller coaster from the top-of-the-world opening to the challenging uphill 18th hole.
