Great escapes

By Amy Rosen

Introducing the next generation in premium pampering.

When a basic hot stone massage just won't cut it (you've been there, done that, thank you!), it's time to take indulgence to a new level. We present a eucalyptus-salt-scrubbed handful of ultra-premium packages from Ontario's chic-est spas. Just say Ahhh.

Spa on the Twenty

The scene: Part restaurant, part vineyard, part inn, located in the charmingly laid-back wine country of the Niagara escarpment, the spa shares the historic brick Vintage House.

The package: The Wine Country Wrap is a full-bodied experience: a robust grape seed rub, an aromatic rosehip and grape seed extract wrap and a skin-quenching application of body lotion.

The perk: A surprise bottle in your room – perhaps a 2004 off-dry Riesling or Pinot Noir – and an intimate wine tasting at Cave Spring Cellars.
Weekend packages from $269 per person per night plus taxes.

Pantages Anti-aging and Longevity Spa

The scene: A downtown Toronto day spa awash in H2O: fish tanks in serenity rooms, a water bar, and an aqua sanctuary (whirlpool, steam room and sauna) behind a veil of organza.

The package: The Sunset Boulevard package kicks off with a bath in a flower-filled room, followed by a softening marigold body scrub, wrap and massage, and a honey-and-orange firming facial. The finale? A spa lunch and indispensable mani-pedi.

The perk: Still or sparkling? Fruit-infused bottled water (think refreshing lemon-cucumber or strawberry) awaits at the Aqua Bar.
Package lasts 5 1/2 hours and costs $379 plus taxes.

Indulgence: The Spa at Taboo Resort, Golf and Spa

The scene: Located on over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of cottage country parkland, complete with sandy beaches and boardwalks, woodlands and ancient rock ridges, and the home golf course of Masters Champ Mike Weir.

The package: Between Friends includes a sea salt body glow spiked with essential oils, a 30-minute de-stressing head and shoulder massage, and a mani-pedi. Share the experience with a friend in a private suite with Jacuzzi and fireplace, overlooking tranquil Lake Muskoka.

The perk: Eat at the new 30-seat Elements culinary theater, where chef Jay Scaife cooks up sumptuous, multi-course tasting menus.
Package lasts 2 1/2 hours and costs $200 per person.

Ste. Anne's Country Inn & Spa

The scene: This 1858 château is all stone walls, turrets and gables, surrounded by more than 570 hectares (1400 acres) of tennis courts, swimming pool, gardens, woodsy trails and farmland.

The package: Overnight packages include $100 spa and/or fitness allowance, two group fitness classes, three meals plus a delightful afternoon tea: mini sour cherry scones still warm from the oven.

The perk: The only Moor Mud Bath in Canada. Slide into warming mineral-rich mud and, later, lie under an eight-headed Vichy shower that kneads the flesh and soothes the soul. And there's nothing more decadent than checking in for the entire day!
Packages start at $525 per person per night.
