Concierge tells all: Yellowknife

Favorites from Andre Linz, General Manager of the Explorer Hotel.

Pure Canada: Where’s the most romantic spot to get a late-night bite?

Andre Linz: I’d have to say Trader’s Grill at the Explorer Hotel. You get a wonderful view of the surrounding forests and the inukshuk sculptures that line them. My favorite dish is the prime rib; it’s definitely the best beef in town. We age the meat for 28 days and then dry rub it with a secret blend of spices.

PC: What are your nightlife recommendations?

AL:  If you’re looking for a pub-style place, the Black  Knight is cozy and really friendly, whereas the younger crowd usually goes to the White Fox. If you’re looking for live entertainment, the Gold Range Hotel is the spot; they have live music.

PC: What’s the best way to enjoy a summer day in Yellowknife?

AL: Fishing! We probably have some of the best fishing in North  America, so when it’s nice out, everyone goes out on the lake. You can rent a guided boat downtown and spend the day on the open waters.

PC: What’s your favorite room in the hotel and why?

AL: The eighth-floor rooms  all have really beautiful views of Yellowknife. On one side, you look out across the city and Frame Lake, and on the other side, you get  an amazing view of Great Slave Lake and the Back Bay.
