The real Brokeback Mountain: Alberta's gay rodeo.

Ready to saddle up for an unbridled Brokeback Mountain adventure? The bustling city of Calgary plays host to the Canadian Rockies International Rodeo (June 30–July 2, 2006) – the only all-gay rodeo in the country. Watch, or even join in, as leather-clad athletes from all over the world compete in hardy sports like bareback riding, chute dogging and calf roping. With country-themed social events planned for the evenings, and the world-famous Calgary Stampede (July 7–16, 2006) kicking off just five days later, the CRIR has become one of the most anticipated stops on the gay rodeo circuit.

This isn’t just a weekend for experienced riders. If you’re new to rodeo, mosey over to one of the “camp” events: The three-way “Wild Drag Race” challenges a drag queen and two friends to coax a wild steer across the finish line, while “Goat Dressing” features two-person teams that must swiftly slip a pair of jockey shorts on an unsuspecting goat. Not prepared to take any bull? The CRIR provides a gender-bending option: In lieu of wild steers, daring cowboys and cowgirls can attempt to ride feisty young cows. Talk about bucking convention.
